Leukemia and other Cliches

I was just randomly flipping through channels (there aren't many) and stopped at this show known as Glass Slipper (directly translated). The show was a re-run and I had watched it more than once. However, it was quite a nice show and I decided to give the re-run a try as there, other than math homework, apparently was nothing to do. And as we all know, and I will not attempt to deny it, doing math is one of the last things I would ever do on a voluntary basis.

Ok, away from math, back to the show. I shall give a brief summary of where the show had advanced to:

Irresistably adorable, miniscule hamster-like Jin Yun Xi lost her sister when she was like... what? five? (her dad died not long ago, because of... want to guess? Leukemia!) and got knocked down by a big fat lorry. And then, guess what? She lost her memory! Surprise, surprise! Well, the driver(s) of the lorry, as I vaguely recall, were a pair of horrendous, rat-like husband and wife/ auntie and her lover. (No idea if they're married.) To avoid prosecution, the rats brought hamstery Jin Yun Xi to their home to live with them and their brat of a daughter, Sheng Xi.

** A random question: Why do most korean characters have the word 'xi' in their name?

this glass slippers show: yunXI, taiXI and shengXI. Goodness, three 'xi-s' in a single show.
qiu tian de tong hua: junxi and the girl is also something xi right? Oh yea! enxi!
My lovely samsoon: (My cuckoo samsoon more like it) Anyway, samsoon wanted to change her name to XiZhen. Another 'xi'!
Ok, so far can't remember any more. But you get my point, don't you?

Sorry, sidetracked.

After ten-thousand years have passed (figuratively of course), yunxi contracted... guess what? Leukemia! (if my memory did not fail me. However, I'm not that certain cause it's my mom who told me that yunxi got leukemia.) But whether she got leukemia anot is not the main issue. The main issue is...

WHY DO ALL KOREAN SCRIPTWRITERS ENJOY SEEING THEIR METICULOUSLY SCULPTED CHARACTERS CONTRACT LEUKEMIA?

'Where got?', you may ask. Let's see...

Qiu tian de tong hua: The pretty female lead got leukemia right?
glass slipper: 2 freaking characters got leukemia!
ok, i currently can't remember anymore but anybody who wants to add on to this list are perfectly welcome. There's more! I remember!

So the question is, why do scriptwriters love having their beloved works of art contract such a cliche disease? And why not, like... brain tumour or testicular cancer or something. Is it because leukemia seem like such a romantic disease? That the genteel ladies that contracted them become like shu nus? They can't run around and whack their boyfriends with baseball bats and have to sit there quietly, barely able to open their eyes. That leads me to the issue of why guys like those girls who sit there and don't move, don't talk. That's totally beyond me too, but that comes later. But I do have to admit that SOMETIMES, the leukemia part can be quite beautiful because the big-eyed, soft-spoken female leads become so vulnerable, that it brings us all back to the medieval days where knights in shining armour carry their maidens across pools of mud. Well, if their girlfriends aren't leukemia-stricken, which guy will be chivalrous enough to do that? It's because of this 'romantic' disease, that we get to see the respect males should rightfully offer females. It's kind of sad, like how couples in reality don't cherish each other until they break up or something. I guess that's just human nature.

Oh yeah. That brings me to how contracting disease has become the 'conflict' part of every drama serial. E.g. green forest (that's directly translated). As I watched the show progressed towards the end, I was damn exasperated that yanyan caught some freaking disease and have to become weak and all that. Hello? Yanyan is supposed to be bubbly and strong, that's why she's different and that's why I like her. Slapping my palm against my forehead, I turned to my mom and began to suggest a series of different preferable endings. (Fine, preferable to me but not many I guess.) I went on about how scriptwriters keep making the female leads sick. They should come up with more novel ideas instead. A few examples are as below:

1) The fake-o prince william had an affair with a psychologically scarred maniac about 5 years ago. Then when fake-po prince william left the maniac, (Let's name her... Miss Piggy! Ok, wrong choice, she's glaring at me from my bed now. But never mind.) she was so emotionally imbalanced, she started leaving freaky messages on Yanyan's voicemail. Like... "Muahahas! You... VIXEN! You have 9 days to live! 30/4/2006 will be the day you die!!!" Then after like 8 days, Yanyan found out that the cuckoo woman was Miss Piggy and that Miss Piggy had been involved with fake-o prince william for quite some time. In other words, fake-o prince william cheated on Yanyan. Then Yanyan gave fake-o prince william two tight slaps and kick him in the testicular area! Joy! Then she get married with that Owen and live happily ever after! Owen happy, Yanyan happy, fake-o not happy, I'M HAPPY. (Miss Piggy's happy too)

I'm faithful to Sir Cowie
ok?

2) Oh! I had a sudden brainstorm. How about... Yanyan chose fake-o prince william and Owen got really furious. Owen then started to go a little bonkers and begin to do a series of weird things like sending suicidal mail and all that. (to fake-o william of course) Then in the end, Owen skillfully kills fake-o william and Yanyan will never know! After william's funeral procession, Owen propsed to Yanyan and she agreed! Double joy!

Ok, that's a little far fetched. Fine, more than a little. But it's still nice to imagine, what the world will be like with a little more creativity!
